Wynonah Dove's Streaming Releases
Wynonah Dove's latest release is a bold reimagining of the Kitty Wells classic It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels—a quintessential "honky tonk, woman-done-wrong" anthem.
Reflecting on the production, Wynonah shares:
"I've always admired artists like Dwight Yoakam and Raul Malo of The Mavericks for their ability to take classics and breathe new life into them. That approach inspired me to put my own spin on this song. I stepped into the narrator's shoes—an oddly fitting pair, given my lived experiences. To me, the lyrics speak to a pissed-off, used-up woman going through 'the change,' bitterly reflecting on relationships with men.
Kitty Wells’ original version felt almost apologetic, as though meekly justifying herself. But I wanted to channel 'Kitty with her claws out,' correcting the double standards and misogynistic undertones of the time. This version feels vindicated, like justice was served—or at least, that the woman had her say and was finally heard. And really, isn’t that all we ever want? To be heard."
This release showcases Wynonah’s ability to honor tradition while bringing a modern, empowered voice to timeless classics.
Wynonah Dove’s debut album is a masterful blend of Appalachian folk, Americana, and bluegrass traditions, weaving together tales of tragedy, philosophy, and a touch of biographical gossip. A self-described Appalachian-gypsy, Wynonah left her home along Virginia's Crooked Road in 2014, trading the misty Clinch Mountains for the sunlit shores of Australia. This shift in perspective inspired a collection of songs that delve deeply into her roots while embracing the evolution of her journey.
The album features eight original tracks, written and co-written by Wynonah, capturing her rich storytelling and musical heritage. Released on 22 February 2022, the album is available for streaming on all major platforms, offering listeners a heartfelt exploration of home, identity, and the stories that shape us.
