There are books you stumble across. And then there are the ones that feel like someone threw you a rope just as the ground gave way.

For me, The M Word by Dr. Ginny Mansberg was the latter.

When I hit my early perimenopause years, it didn’t arrive like a gentle shift. It hit like a landslide. And what made it harder was the silence - or worse, the well-meaning but utterly dismissive responses from medical professionals who either didn’t know what to look for…or didn’t believe what they were seeing.

I was juggling chronic health conditions, autoimmune symptoms, neurological issues, and the sheer exhaustion that comes from being gaslit by specialists who shrug and say, “Your tests are fine.”

Except my body was very clearly not fine.

My GP tried. Endocrinologists missed the signs. A gynaecologist dismissed the severity. And I was left cobbling together fragments of my own wellbeing like a woman assembling a mosaic in the dark.

That’s why The M Word felt like oxygen.

Why This Book Changed Everything

It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t preachy. It wasn’t telling me to “relax,” “accept aging,” or “trust my hormones will sort themselves out.”

Dr. Mansberg gives you actual information - from hormone pathways and symptom patterns to evidence-based options for treatment. She validates the messy middle of perimenopause in a clear, grounded, no-nonsense way.

Suddenly, the chaos I was living made sense.

The brain fog, the weight fluctuations, the sleep disturbances, the mood swings, the heavy or unpredictable cycles…they weren’t personal failures. They were physiology.

And knowing that gave me my power back.

The Tools That Helped Me Self-Advocate

What I loved most is how practical it is. The M Word helped me:

  • Identify perimenopause symptoms I didn’t realise were connected

  • Understand what tests do matter and what ones are a waste of time

  • Learn the difference between evidence-based HRT and fear-based myths

  • Know what questions to take back to my doctor

  • Document my symptoms in ways clinicians can’t brush off

  • Build a foundation for making medical decisions without guessing

It didn’t magically fix everything overnight. What it did was give me clarity - and clarity is power, especially for women who’ve been told their whole lives that pain is normal, exhaustion is normal, mood swings are normal, and that self-sacrifice is expected.

Why This Book Still Matters To Me

I now coach women living through chronic health conditions, autoimmune issues, and the menopause transition. I see firsthand how many of us are dismissed, misdiagnosed, or left to “cope” without being given the tools to actually thrive.

This book is one of the first things I recommend.

Not because it’s perfect. But because it’s honest. And accessible. And compassionate. And written by someone who understands the medical system from the inside.

The M Word helped me become a better advocate for myself - and later, for the women I support.

Who Should Read This Book

  • Anyone in their 30s, 40s, or 50s wondering what the hell is happening to their body

  • Anyone who has felt dismissed by a doctor

  • Anyone who wants to understand hormones beyond TikTok snippets and outdated stereotypes

  • Anyone who wants real, evidence-based answers without shame or fluff

  • Anyone supporting a partner, friend, or loved one through menopause

Final Thoughts

This book didn’t “fix” me. But it armed me. It encouraged me. It gave me language for what was happening inside my body. And it reminded me - powerfully - that women deserve answers, respect, and informed choice.

If you’re standing at the edge of perimenopause feeling confused, overwhelmed, or unheard…this is a damn good place to start.
